How to Dominate Google Maps With Your Business Profile (SA Guide)

Google Business Profile and Google Maps optimisation for South Africa

When someone in Johannesburg searches "plumber near me" or "web designer Sandton", Google displays a map panel with 3 businesses before it shows any organic website results. This is called the Local Pack, and it gets more clicks than anything else on the page.

The tool that determines who appears in that Local Pack is your Google Business Profile (GBP) — formerly Google My Business. It is completely free. It is the most powerful marketing tool available to a South African local business. And the majority of SA businesses are using it poorly or not at all.

Why Google Business Profile is Your Best Free Marketing Tool

Consider what a fully optimised GBP gives you:

  • Appear in the Local Pack — the 3-pack map results that dominate the top of local Google searches
  • Display your phone number, address, and hours directly in search results — customers can call you without even visiting your website
  • Collect and showcase reviews — social proof that converts searchers into customers
  • Post updates, offers, and events directly in Google Search and Maps
  • See customer analytics: how many people searched for you, called you, requested directions, or visited your website
  • Answer customer questions before they even have to ask

All of this is free. Businesses that invest time in their GBP consistently outrank competitors who spend thousands on ads.

Step 1: Claim and Verify Your Profile

Go to business.google.com and search for your business. There are three possibilities:

  1. Your business already has a profile you created: Just sign in and ensure it's verified.
  2. There is an unclaimed profile Google created automatically: Claim it — Google creates profiles for many businesses from existing web data. Click "Claim this business".
  3. No profile exists: Click "Add your business to Google" and follow the setup wizard.

Verification Options

Google typically verifies SA businesses by:

  • Postcard: A postcard with a verification code is mailed to your business address (takes 1–2 weeks)
  • Phone/SMS: Available for some accounts — instant
  • Video verification: A newer option — you record a short video of your business location

Do not skip verification. An unverified listing cannot rank in the Local Pack and may be removed by Google.

Step 2: Optimise Every Section of Your Profile

Most businesses fill in their name, address, and phone number and stop there. A fully optimised profile has every section completed:

Business Name

Use your exact legal or trading name — do not add keywords like "Best Plumber Johannesburg" to your name. This violates Google's guidelines and can get your listing suspended.

Category (Critical)

Your primary category is the most important ranking factor in GBP. Choose the most specific category that accurately describes your main service. Add secondary categories for additional services. For example, a web design agency might use: Primary — "Web designer"; Secondary — "Internet marketing service", "Software company".

Business Description (750 characters)

Write a natural description that explains what you do, who you serve, and what makes you different. Include your city and service area naturally. Avoid keyword stuffing — write for customers, not search engines. Include a call to action.

Hours of Operation

Set accurate hours including special hours for public holidays. South Africa has many public holidays — update these regularly. Incorrect hours lead to frustrated customers and negative reviews.

Service Area

If you serve customers at their location (e.g., plumber, electrician, web designer), add your service areas. You can list up to 20 cities or regions.

Products and Services

List every service you offer with descriptions and prices where applicable. This content is indexed by Google and helps you appear for more specific service searches.

Consistency is critical: Your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) must be identical across your GBP, your website, social media, and all online directories. Inconsistencies confuse Google and hurt your local ranking.

Step 3: The Photo Strategy That Boosts Rankings

Businesses with photos receive 42% more requests for directions and 35% more website clicks than those without (Google data). Photo quality and quantity both matter.

What Photos to Upload

  • Logo: Clear, high-quality PNG or JPG (250×250px minimum)
  • Cover photo: Your best brand image (1080×608px recommended)
  • Interior photos: If you have a physical location, show the inside
  • Exterior photos: Show the outside from the street — this helps people identify your location
  • Team photos: Put faces to the business — builds trust significantly
  • Work/product photos: Show examples of your work, products, or services in action

Photo Upload Schedule

Google's algorithm favours active profiles. Aim to upload 1–2 new photos per week. This signals to Google that your business is active and engaged. This is one of the most underrated local SEO tactics.

Step 4: Build Your Review Strategy

Reviews are the #1 factor in converting a Local Pack impression into a customer. They also influence your ranking. A business with 50 4.8-star reviews will consistently outrank a business with 5 5-star reviews.

How to Get More Reviews

  • Ask directly after a positive interaction: "If you're happy with our service, would you mind leaving us a Google review? It really helps us." This simple request, delivered at the right moment, is highly effective.
  • Create a short review link: In your GBP dashboard, go to Get more reviews → Share review form. This creates a direct link to your review form. Put this link in your email signature, WhatsApp replies, and receipts.
  • Follow up via WhatsApp: After completing a job, send a WhatsApp: "Thank you for choosing us! If we delivered on our promise, we'd love a Google review: [link]"
  • Add a "Review Us on Google" button to your website

How to Respond to Reviews

Respond to every review — positive and negative. Responses show potential customers that you are engaged and professional. For negative reviews, respond calmly, take responsibility where appropriate, and offer to resolve the issue offline.

Never respond aggressively or defensively to a negative review — potential customers read your responses just as carefully as the review itself.

Step 5: Google Posts — The Weekly Habit Most Businesses Skip

Google Posts allow you to publish updates, offers, events, and products directly to your GBP. These posts appear in your profile in Google Search and Maps. They are virtually unused by most SA businesses — giving you an immediate competitive advantage if you use them consistently.

Types of Posts

  • What's New: General business updates, new services, team news
  • Offers: Time-limited promotions with a start and end date
  • Events: Workshops, open days, product launches

Post Best Practices

  • Post at least once per week — posts expire after 7 days for "What's New"
  • Include a high-quality image in every post
  • Add a clear call-to-action button (Call, Learn More, Book)
  • Keep text concise — 150–300 words maximum
  • Mention your city and service naturally in the post text

Step 6: The Q&A Section — Answer Before They Ask

GBP has a Q&A feature where anyone can ask and answer questions about your business. This is a powerful tool that most businesses ignore entirely.

Proactively add your own questions and answers for the most common queries you receive:

  • "Do you offer free quotes?" → "Yes, all initial consultations are completely free."
  • "What areas do you serve?" → "We serve Johannesburg and all surrounding areas including Sandton, Randburg, Midrand, Centurion, and Pretoria."
  • "How do I get started?" → "Contact us via phone, WhatsApp, or our website contact form and we'll respond within 1 hour during business hours."

Seeding your own Q&A section prevents inaccurate answers from the public, and adds keyword-rich content to your profile.

Step 7: Track Your GBP Performance

GBP provides analytics (called "Insights") showing you:

  • Search queries: What keywords people used to find your business
  • Profile views: How many times your profile appeared in search and maps
  • Actions: How many people clicked your website, called you, or requested directions
  • Photo views: How your photos perform compared to similar businesses

Review these monthly. If direction requests are high but calls are low, your phone number may be incorrect or your description may not be compelling enough. If search impressions are low, your category or description may need adjustment.

Pro Tips for SA Businesses

  • Use South African English: Write your description and posts using SA spelling and terminology. "Neighbourhood" not "neighborhood", "colour" not "color".
  • Mention payment methods: SA customers often want to know if you accept EFT, SnapScan, or cash. Add this to your attributes or description.
  • Add your WhatsApp number: While GBP doesn't have a WhatsApp field, mention it prominently in your description with a note to WhatsApp you.
  • Mark your business as temporarily closed: If you're away for the holidays, use the "Mark as temporarily closed" feature rather than deleting your profile or leaving incorrect hours.

The Bigger Picture: GBP + Website + Local SEO

Your GBP works best when combined with a strong website. Google considers your website's content, speed, and authority when determining Local Pack rankings. A well-built website with local content (city-specific service pages, local blog posts, SA-specific testimonials) dramatically amplifies the effect of your GBP optimisation.
